Dr. Sandy Handfield Named 2026 Distinguished Alumna

The Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) Foundation has named Dr. Sandy Handfield its 2026 Distinguished Alumna, announcing the honor at the Annual Titan Scholarship Reception held Thursday, April 9, on the EFSC Melbourne Campus.
A native Floridian, Dr. Handfield is among Eastern Florida State College’s most accomplished alumni. Her association with the College began in 1971 as a student worker while attending classes and has grown into a remarkable career spanning more than five decades of dedicated service.
“Sandy’s contributions have played a key role in shaping EFSC’s growth, success, and continued impact across our region,” said EFSC President Dr. Jim Richey. “Her commitment to student success is truly exceptional, as demonstrated through her leadership in academic programs, curriculum development, and strategic initiatives designed to enhance academic outcomes.”
Dr. Handfield earned her associate degree from Eastern Florida State College (then Brevard Community College). She went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of Central Florida, a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix, and a doctorate in leadership and management from Capella University.
Her professional career at EFSC includes roles as an administrative assistant, classroom instructor, Director of Workforce Programs, Dean of Students, Associate Provost at both the Titusville and Melbourne campuses, and Provost of the Melbourne Campus. She currently serves as Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Melbourne Campus Site Administrator.
In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Handfield has made community service a priority throughout her career. She has served on numerous boards, including United Way of Brevard, the Space Coast Chamber of Commerce (formerly the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce), and weVENTURE at Florida Institute of Technology.
In 2024, Dr. Handfield and her husband, Don, established the Handfield Family Scholarship with the EFSC Foundation. The scholarship was awarded for the first time during this year’s scholarship reception.
Eastern Florida State College is committed to equal access/equal opportunity in its programs, activities, and employment.
“Sandy is the perfect choice for this honor,” said EFSC Foundation Interim Executive Director Victoria Jones. “This recognition highlights not only her professional accomplishments, but also her lasting legacy at EFSC and the broader community we serve.”
The Distinguished Alumni Award is among the College’s highest honors and is presented annually to individuals who exemplify exceptional service, leadership, and dedication.
The EFSC Foundation will begin accepting applications for the 2027 Distinguished Alumni Award in July. For more information about the EFSC Foundation, scholarships, or the Distinguished Alumni Award, visit foundation.easternflorida.edu or call 321-433-7055.
